Plus size fashion has improved a lot since I went to the prom! Over 20 years ago, we didn’t have great dresses like the one in the picture above from IGIGI, who sells sexy, sophisticated, plus size clothing.
It is getting close to prom season again and you beautiful plus-size teens out there will need the perfect dress to show off your wonderful curves!
I was looking at IGIGI’s site today and I fell in love with many of the dresses…
The dress in the picture above is a Maya Chiffon Dress in Black/Coral in sizes 12 - 30/32.
The Lucille Cocktail Dress in Red with Shrug is another beautiful option in sizes 12 - 30/32. It retails for $150. Now you could make a grand entrance in a dress like this to any formal party!
The Lucille Cocktail Dress in Black/Silver with Shrug, which retails for $159, is another beautiful selection that is also available in sizes 12 - 30/32.

Regardless of our size, women tend to purchase a lot of black clothing because the color black has a slimming effect. But the problem with black is that it can be super boring - no excitement, no fun, no flare.
All hope is not lost, though. Fashion designers are creating more plus-size clothing that is figure flattering and they are giving clothes the slimming effect by the cut of the outfit, not the color.
You don’t have to eliminate black completely from your wardrobe - use other bright, cheerful colors to liven up a black outfit. You can fill your closet with a lot of great clothes in various colors that will show off your best features and assets!

Amy over at RNCentral.com sent me a great article on the 25 most popular yet ineffective diet plans on the market today. Please check the link out below to see if you are currently participating in any of these diets.
Diet Overkill: 25 of the Most Ridiculous (and Ineffective) Popular Diets
“Some people will do anything to lose weight, even if it means defying common sense and nutrition. But just because your best friend’s cousin lost 20 pounds by drinking hot-peppered lemonade doesn’t mean you should do the same. These 25 diets are not only ridiculous, they’re ineffective and even dangerous.”
Some of these diets include Adkins, the cabbage soup diet, the hallelujah diet and many more!

Please welcome guest blogger, Jodell Raymond, of Black Cat Plus.com. You can read more about Jodell at the end of this post. It is a pleasure and an honor to have her post on Big Beautiful U!

What I love most about fashion is its ability to help us remember the past, give us the opportunity to reflect upon the present, and inspire us to look forward to our future. Strong silhouettes dominate this season with tailored jackets and trousers. Dresses such as our Linda Lundstrom Pretty Leaves Dress, has a more fitted look with a hint of frilliness –just a hint—to remind us of perhaps a kinder, gentler time.

The prints that you will see for Spring ’08 will appeal to a variety of tastes. From fun, graphic, prints influenced from the 70’s in geometric shapes to vintage-y shifts and tribal patterns such as Black Cat Plus Label Tribal Print Jewel Kimono Sleeve Top. For colors, think sophistication in muted patterns, bright jewel tones and colors that pop.
Some of the re-occurring themes that you will see this season and that will be featured at Black Cat Plus :

- Florals- from flowers large and small to petals to leaves on the vine. We love Ash & Sara’s Floral Mod Print Tee.
- Spring Parade-watertone colors which highlight a feminine look.
- Essentials-black and white, navy, and all of the colors in between from earth-tones to jewel tones.
- Denim-Dark washes, low to medium rise. Average leg to wide leg. Denim is the modern woman’s answer to dress pants.
Plus size women can absolutely take advantage of the strong silhouettes, fitted looks, and the variety of patterns and colors. Have fun with mixing and matching pieces into your wardrobe. So, attend that Garden Party and toast to the best of times–we are living them!
In her travels as a trainer and speaker for GenderCorp on women’s leadership issues to women across the U.S. and Canada, Jodell was constantly being approached for her fashion advice, even going so far to take clothes off her back to give to her plus size clients! A size 18, Jodell spent considerable time and effort trying to find clothes that had a modern look. Out of that frustration came the inspiration to open Black Cat Plus, her contemporary web clothing boutique so that other plus size women did not have to work so hard to find clothes that reflected current trends and busy lifestyles. The Lil’ Black Cat Designer Plus Boutique/Showroom and Warehouse are located in Rochester, N.Y. They have recently partnered with a local boutique, SoLia Boutique, and are excited to bring customers the latest in contemporary fashions in ALL sizes!

If you are a huge fan of Lane Bryant’s new Right Fit jeans, you will love the fact that they now have them in Capris as well!
I refuse to wear shorts because I hate the way my legs look these days, so in the summer, Capris is all I wear.
Lane Bryant has continued to expand their Right Fit collection. Right Fit now includes three styles of jeans, two styles of pants, and now denim Capris. All is well in the world!

The New York Times published the aritlce “The Dreaded Weigh-In” last week and some of it hit home to me. Here is an excerpt from the article:
“University of Pennsylvania researchers say they believe some women may be avoiding the doctor just to avoid being weighed in front of other people. They surveyed 482 college-age men and women to determine how sensitive they were to the disclosure of personal information, including their weight.
The study, to be published in an upcoming issue of the medical journal Appetite, showed that women experienced high degrees of discomfort at the prospect of being weighed in the presence of others.”
I admit that I am one of these people. I am overdue right now for my yearly Pap test and breast exam, but I won’t make my appointment because I don’t want to face getting on the scales.
Patients should have the right to be weighed in private. My personal problem isn’t so much WHERE I’m weighed, it’s just the simple fact of having to BE weighed. But for many, being weighed in public and within earshot of others is enough to keep them away from necessary doctors’ appointments.
Some of the commenters say that if you have an issue with being weighed at the doctors’ office, just refuse to be weighed in.
