Preventing Airport Thefts

October 10th, 2007 by admin

An airport can be the ideal place for a thief.  The many tired and distracted travelers and the barely controlled chaos can give a thief a great opportunity to walk away with your money and/or belongings.

To prevent airport theft:

  • Never let a bag out of your sight anywhere in the terminal including bathrooms and restaurants.
  • At the security checkpoint, don’t dump valuables such as wallets and watches into a tray.  Place them in the side pocket of a carry-on bag before you get to security.  When you go through the metal detector, keep a close eye on your carry on items, especially laptops.  These are among the most desirable objects for thieves.
  • At your destination, get to the baggage carousel immediately.  Few airports have attendants checking baggage tags at these points, which means that anyone can walk up and take whatever bag they like - including yours.
