Chronic Illness and Weight Gain

December 31st, 2007 by admin

I read an article on Associated Content that talks about how easy it is for people who have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to gain weight.  As a sufferer of these illnesses, how I know that this is true.  A lot of people assume that the weight gain seen in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue comes specifically from less activity, but there are other factors that cause a lot of the weight gain.  Hormonal issues and sleep disturbances are a big factor in the weight gain seen by these patients.

The author of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and Weight Gain had this to say:

According to Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, author of From Fatigued to Fantastic, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients gain weight due to the hormonal imbalances, sleep disturbances and changes in activity levels. Hormonal imbalances, particularly the hypothyroidism found in CFS patients, cause the metabolism to slow down leading to weight gain. Cortisol, the “stress hormone”, is often low in CFS patients and this too can contribute to weight gain.

Sleeping properly eight to nine hours a night also helps keep the body functioning properly and the metabolism healthy. Fibromyalgia and CFS patients tend to have sleep disturbances and insomnia due to their bodies’ biological clocks going haywire. Because of lack of sleep and unpredictable sleeping patterns, weight gain is a result.

Time’s Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2007

December 28th, 2007 by admin

Every year it amazes me how much more America becomes advanced in technology and medical breakthroughs.  I cannot wait until the day where a cancer cure makes the list!  Below I have listed the top 10 medical breakthroughs with a brief synopsis of each one.  You can read the entire article by clicking here.  Here is the top 10 list from Time for medical breakthroughs:

 1.  Circumcision Can Prevent HIV
The NIH stopped two clinical trials of male circumcision after an early data review showed that the procedure dramatically reduced transmission of HIV.

2.  Test for Metastatic Breast Cancer
Surgeons now have a faster way to assess whether breast cancer has spread, thanks to the FDA’s approval of the first molecular test to detect metastatic breast cancer.

3.  First Human Vaccine Against Bird Flu
In 2007, the FDA approved the first human vaccine against the bird flu.

4. Alli for Weight Loss
Alli is the first FDA approved weight loss drug to be sold over-the-counter. Alli (a.k.a. orlistat) works by monkeying with lipase, an enzyme the body uses to break down and digest the fat in food.

5. New Diabetes Genes
Research teams from the United States and Finland uncovered four new genetic variants linked to an increased risk of diabetes.

6. End To Menstruation
Women wanting to dodge the nuisance of their monthly menses can now turn to Lybrel, the first continuous use birth control drug approved by the FDA.

7. Fibromyalgia Relief
This year the FDA approved the antiseizure drug Lyrica (pregabalin), made by Pfizer, as a treatment for fibromyalgia.

8. Early-Stage Test for Lung Cancer
A new blood test may improve the odds of catching the disease earlier, at a more curable stage. Called LC Detect, the test measures blood levels of a protein present in all stages of lung cancer, but rarely seen in healthy people.

9. New Source of Stem Cells
One advancement that may not have had its due was the discovery of stem cells in amniotic fluid. Researchers believe that amniotic fluid–derived stem cells, AFS for short, have the potential to give rise to many, but perhaps not all, of the 220 specialized cell types found in the human body — placing the potential usefulness of AFS cells somewhere between embryonic and adult stem cells.

10. Benefits of Vitamin D
A slew of new studies published in 2007 suggests that the vitamin has a lot of other benefits: Diets high in D may ward off diabetes, gum disease and multiple sclerosis — and maybe even cancer.

Pure Weight Loss (L.A. Weight Loss) Closes All Locations

December 27th, 2007 by admin

As a former and unhappy customer of Pure Weight Loss (L.A. Weight Loss at the time I was a customer), I can honestly say that I am happy to see these stores closing.  I feel that their program is a huge rip off.  The following excerpt is from an article on Associated Content - Pure Weight Loss Closing 400 Centers:

Pure Weight Loss released the following statement as their reasons for closing. “Fierce competition from the Internet, the introduction of Alli, the over-the-counter weight loss pill, and other commercial diet programs, combined with a difficult economic environment, have forced us to take this action.”

Pure Weight Loss/L.A. Weight Loss has been under scrutiny for the past few years for some of their sales and marketing tactics. Lawsuits have resulted due to Pure Weight Loss falsely advertising the cost of the program.

I look for many lawsuits to be filed against the company if people are not able to get the money back they already paid in advance for their weight loss program, foods, and maintenance.

Florida Teacher Arrested for Allowing Parent to Discipline Child At School

December 27th, 2007 by admin

A Jacksonville, Florida gym teacher is facing charges of child abuse. The gym teacher is charged for allegedly calling in a parent to whip his child for misbehaving. Not only did the coach ask the child’s stepfather to come into spank his child, but he also gave him a room to use. Both men were arrested. You can watch the video below for further details.

The Realities Of Middle Child Syndrome

December 24th, 2007 by admin

A new article on Associated Content discusses the Realities of Middle Child Syndrome.  This article is in response to the one I posted about the other day, The Effects of Middle Child Syndrome.

The author writes this article to respond to the comments and emails she received.  She says in her latest article that she received both positive and negative comments.  She also went on to say:

Just because I talked about the realities of growing up as the middle child does not mean that I blame my childhood on my life today. As adults, we are responsible for our own actions and how our lives turn out. I do not condone or defend anyone who says, “I’m the middle child so that is why my life stinks”. I believe that if you want a different life, then you need to make different choices to get better results. I have spent my entire life working hard to be the best I can be but none of us are perfect.

I think in this article she emphasizes more on the fact that regardless of birth order, there are positive and negative circumstances surrounding each one.

Jamie Lynn Spears - Britney’s Little Sister Pregnant?

December 19th, 2007 by admin

When will the gosisp ever stop with this family? Is Jamie Lynn Spears really pregnant or is it just another rumor in the celebrity world? This family has definitely their fair share of time in the spotlight. Rumor has it that Jamie Lynn Spears, 16-year-old sister of famous singer, Britney Spears, is 12-weeks pregnant.

If this is true, it is a shame that someone so young will be forced into adulthood but actions have consequences. I’ve been reading on many rumor sites that Britney is being blamed for the pregnancy because of not being a positive role model for her sister. Hello! Her sister is the one that had sex and got pregnant! Place the blame where it belongs. Teenagers are getting pregnant every day - she’s famous so that’s why this one is a big deal.

Work Still Slow For IZEA Bloggers

December 18th, 2007 by admin

Paid blogging work has come to a screeching halt for many of us who blog for IZEA.  I spoke to one blogger (that wishes to remain anonymous) who was previously making between $600 - $800 a month before the Google smackdown hit.  In the past two to three weeks since this blogger’s page ranks were updated in the IZEA system, the pay hasn’t even reached $200.

A lot of bloggers have taken a huge hit and some are looking for other blogging opportunities, writing work and even jobs outside the home to make up for their lost income.

The anonymous IZEA blogger had this to say:

“I have depended on the money I was making from Payperpost or IZEA to pay for the bills my spouse’s paychecks don’t cover. This income loss has affected our family greatly, especially with the holidays here. I have been forced to look for a job locally even though I wanted to be able to work from home. Many of the die hard IZEA bloggers are determined to stick it out until this new Real Rank system takes hold with advertisers but I don’t have that luxury to wait around. We need the money now.”

I wonder now if paid posting is quickly going to start dying off. This Google hit is scaring many people away from blogging for money.
