AIFS is defined by chronic, nonspecific complaints, a positive ANA (antinuclear antibody), and the absence of another explanation for complaints.
Some severe cases of AIFS meet the criteria for CFIDS. In a Japanese study, a CFIDS patient with a positive ANA was described as having “developed postpartum thyroiditis 5 years after the onset”.
The study showed that “subchemical hypothyroidism is characterized by clinical hypothyroidism not meeting biochemical criteria, but showing evidence of thyroid autoimmunity”.
