The ProHealth Newsletter recently had a survey they asked CFS patients to take part in to determine statistics that may contribute to the CFS community a clearer picture of what’s really going on with the illness. The survey was to determine statistics on patient age, length of illness, and years/number of doctors required to receive a diagnosis.
The survey was suggested by Dorothy Wall, who is the author of Encounters with the Invisible, and CFS physician, Lily Chu, MD. Wall and Chu are researching information for a public education article on ME/CFS, and have found that answers to these types of questions are not easily available in the research literature.

Note: ProHealth said they recognize that this group of diagnosed patients is a minority – since as reckoned by researchers at the CDC and DePaul University, about five of every six ME/CFS sufferers in the U.S. are still undiagnosed. Researchers at the CDC and DePaul University put the number of Americans with ME/CFS at about 900,000 – and estimate that between 80% and 90% of them are undiagnosed and not receiving proper medical care.

Great post. It’s interesting how long people are sick with CFS before even being diagnosed. I guess I am lucky with just 3 years.
I have 2 great doctors now and I am hopeful that soon I’ll start feeling better.
Thanks for the statistics!
