The FDA Advisory Panel voted to ban the painkillers Darvocet and Darvon due to over 3,000 reports of serious propoxyphene-related problems, including suicide, drug dependence, and overdose. The painkiller Darvon is made from propoxyphene; Darvocet is a combination of propoxyphene and acetaminophen. The labels on both Darvocet and Darvon warn that these medications should not be prescribed to patients who are prone to addiction or who may be suicidal.
Darvocet is one of the top 25 most commonly prescribed medications and more than 20 million prescriptions were written in 2007 for Darvocet.
The 14-12 vote followed a meeting prompted by the consumer group Public Citizen, which contends that the drug offers little pain relief, with a high potential for abuse. Whether the FDA will take the advisory panel’s recommendation on banning these painkillers is yet to be determined.
Have you ever taken Darvocet or Darvon for pain? If you did take either of these painkillers did you have any pain relief? I was on Darvocet for quite some time before I became immune to it. Do you think the FDA will ban this drug? With it being one of the most popular medications, I don’t see that happening. Leave your thoughts in the comments!

I don’t think they should ban Darvocet nor Darvon. Yes, I have taken it and it did help my pain then but I need something much stronger. I’m sure it helps many people who has legitimate pain and I personally think they shoud leave the medication alone.
It is not the medication that kills people but it is people who kill people. I believe by taking the drug off the market you will only be hurting those who receive pain relief from the medication. The ones you are trying to protect will just find another drug and maybe one a whole lot worse, like an Inhalant. If it is one trying to commit suicide they will find another medication.
We haven’t learned very much from the drug war that has been going on for years. Has it stopped people from using? No! It has only got worse and by taking the medications away from the patients that need it is is a criminal act, indeed. It will not benefit anyone but satisfy the power they need to ban it.

I started taking Darocet when I was 12 yrs. old. I have taken different ones, including Darvon Compound 65 and Darvon N-100. I haven’t taken any in the last year. Although I had taken some kind of it for over 40 years I didn’t get ‘used to it’ or become addicted either. I only took what I needed when I was in pain. What I did see was that when Eli Lilly quit making it -IT NO LONGER was reliable! I never knew when my prescription was going to work or not. So I just stopped taking it. I cannot do much of anything now because of the pain I am in. I have gained about 100 pounds over the last few years because I am unable to do the things I used to do and love! When Lilly sold the rights they didn’t seem to have sold the formula! The Darvon on the market now is crap! Yes, I am taking into consideration age and wear & tear on my body.

Why after 50 years on the market, and still going strong with many people who are happy with Darvocet’s effectiveness and lack of spacey side effects, the FDA suddenly thinks this med should be banned? Hmm –

Darvocet is off patent and Lilly has a new drug it probably thought would take Darvocet’s place in the market. since that didn’t happen . . .

To ban an effective medication like Darvon/Darvocet borders on criminal behavior since it will deprive pain racked people of the relief they need. Why should they suffer because a few foolish people don’t take the drug as it’s prescribed. They will be driven to extremely addictive drugs like oxycontin, which are almost impossible to get off of. If Johnny Cash were here he’d verify what I’m saying. Please FDA!! Don’t do this. This ban is not about Darvon at all–but some other sinister motivation.
