Over the next 10 years, look for sodium levels in packaged foods, fast food and restaurant meals to be cut by 50%. The American Medical Association is highly concerned over the increasing hazards of the nation’s salt intake, which leads to increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
The AMA is stating that, “Sodium could be lowered gradually, such as by 10% a year, and people wouldn’t even notice”. The AMA is also requesting to see warning labels on high-sodium foods – and for sodium to be removed from the FDA’s list of food ingredients that are recognized as safe.
The majority of Americans consume 2 – 3 times the daily healthy amount of sodium with up to 80% of that coming from restaurant, fast food and processed foods.
